Why would I use an overload relay?


An overload relay is a device that senses when a motor is drawing a current above its rated value and shuts off the current. You can use it to protect the motor from damage caused by overload currents, saving costly replacement and avoiding downtime.

How does a thermal overload relay work?


A thermal overload relay like this one uses a bimetallic strip made up of two dissimilar metals. When they're subjected to an overload current, the metals heat up and expand at different rates, bending the strip to break the power supply.
