It supports the disc when grinding, profiling and levelling-out rough surfaces to ensure a high-quality finish. It's made of hard-density rubber, so there's no risk of it bending or breaking when you apply pressure to your tool. The pad's small 75mm diameter fits the bill for smaller discs.
