Electric Actuators

Electric actuators are motor-driven components that drive or trigger other functions in a circuit. They use electrical input current - unlike hydraulic, pneumatic, thermal or magnetic actuators - and convert it to mechanical (linear or rotary/torque) energy for powering various sorts of control systems.


What types of electric actuators are available online?

  • Rod-style electric actuators provide linear output forces (pushing, pulling or pressing a load). The rod extends/retracts in response to input current, acting on an attached load or one positioned such that it will be moved.


    • They’re a popular alternative to pneumatic slide unit actuators, because the extent of motion for a rod-style actuator isn’t strictly limited by the length of its housing

    • Electric rod actuators are simpler to install and maintain than equivalent hydraulic components, and often chosen where accurate end-to-end positioning, fast speeds or high forces are required

    • Miniature electric actuators are also available in rod-style configurations, reducing the need for awkward or bulky gears, motors, servos and linkages in smaller circuits (e.g. robotics, automotive control systems, consumer appliances and toys)




  • Rodless electric actuators can be belt-driven or screw-driven, and are often preferred in pick-and-place or sensor adjustment roles.


    • They commonly use self-lubricating toothed belts or lead screw axes for smooth linear operation and quick installation, without the need for external lubrication

    • Defined stroke length makes them ideal in systems or machinery designed for lifting, stacking and testing





    • Electric actuator switches can use latching, momentary, reed, or solid state mechanisms to trigger an actuator, with the best choice often depending on install location and environmental conditions.
