What are linear bearings and housings?

A linear bearing is a component that restricts motion to a straight direction (linear motion) only to ensure precision during operation. It is held in housing, also known as a block, that is mounted onto linear guides to hold the load.

What are linear bearings used for?

Linear bearings are designed to be used in a wide range of automated applications from large manufacturing robotics to 3D printers, they ensure continuous straight, smooth and low friction movement. Common applications include:

What is the different between a plain bearing or ball bearing?

Linear plain bearings, also known as bushings, look similar to a tube in design as they comprise only 1 part that slides over rod shafts. They are a cost-effective solution available in different materials that can be used with or without lubricant.


Linear ball bearings are a type of rolling bearing that uses balls to allow the bearing to move over the shaft. This creates a smooth movement with minimal friction.

What do I need to consider when selecting a bearing?

Once the application and load is known, there are many differentiating specifications of bearings for consideration that include:

  • Open or closed
  • Dimensions - width, length, inside diameter
  • Dynamic load capacity
  • Material
  • Self-lubricating
  • Self-aligning

What lubrication should be used with linear bearings?

Prior to installation, bearings should be stored in their packaging to remain lubricated. Lack of lubrication is the main cause of bearing failure so it is important to select the proper oil or grease for the application.

  • Grease lubricants adhere well and are best used in moderate to high load applications
  • Oil lubricants dissipate heat well and are more suited to high-speed applications
